On Friday, June 12, 2026, Msgr. Iyad Twal, Patriarchal Vicar in Jordan, received the international Antonio Feltrinelli Prize on behalf of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and H.B. Card. Pierbattista Pizzaballa. The prestigious award recognizes the humanitarian mission carried out by the Patriarchate and the Holy Family Parish in Gaza during the ongoing war.
Addressing the gathering, Msgr. Twal expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stressing that the award is not simply a sign of appreciation, but also an international reminder not to forget those who suffer.
“This award is not only a distinction, but also a call to the international community to remember, to remain attentive to human suffering, and to ensure that the pain of a people should never be met with silence,” he said.
Reflecting on the situation in Gaza, Msgr. Twal stressed that it is not a matter of an abstract issue, but of real people, families, and children enduring immense hardship. He highlighted the mission of the Holy Family Parish, which “opened its doors to everyone without distinction, offering shelter, food, medicine, and hope.”
He reaffirmed that the Church will continue to accompany those in need, defending the dignity of every human person and working to sow the seeds of peace even in the midst of conflict.
Msgr. Twal also noted the significance of the presence of the president of the Italian Republic at the ceremony, saying that it reflects a shared humanitarian concern and confirms that the suffering of the people of Gaza has not been forgotten.
Concluding his remarks, Msgr. Twal reiterated the Latin Patriarchate’s commitment to continuing its mission of service, stating that the award “encourages us to persevere in serving the human person, safeguarding their dignity, and building peace step by step.”
The award ceremony was held at the Academy’s headquarters in Rome, in the presence of President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, together with leading representatives from the diplomatic, academic, and cultural communities.
The Antonio Feltrinelli Prize, among Italy’s most distinguished scientific and humanitarian honors, is awarded by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the oldest scientific academy in Europe, known for its historic contribution to the advancement of knowledge, culture, and humanitarian initiatives.
