Jordan: Meeting of the Union of Religious Congregations reflects on consecrated life and technology

By Munir Bayouk/ en.abouna.org :

On Friday, February 13, 2026, the Union of Religious Congregations (URC) in Jordan held a meeting titled, “Consecrated Life and Technology at Terra Santa College in Amman. The opening session included a morning  prayer, followed by a welcoming address by URC President Sister Samia Nassar, who greeted participants warmly and emphasized the importance of engaging contemporary changes with a renewed ecclesial spirit.

Then, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Iyad Twal, presented an address titled, “Consecrated Life and Technology: Opportunities and Challenges in Light of Catholic Teaching. He stressed that technology is not an enemy of spiritual life, but rather a tool that can support prayer, communion, and Eucharist when placed within a clear ethical framework. He added that technology offers opportunities in education, evangelization, healthcare, and the preservation of knowledge, at a time when it can never replace an active relationship with God. He also warned against excessive reliance on intelligent systems, affirming that the future of consecrated life in the digital age rests on the depth of spiritual roots.

Fr. Fadi Saab, who had arrived from Lebanon especially for the meeting, delivered a lecture titled, “Technology at the Service of Consecrated Life.” He pointed out that a consecrated vocation implies recognizing God’s absolute sovereignty over life, and that the consecrated are called upon to be “people of God” in this digital era. He stressed the need to maintain a balance between mind and heart, so that technology would remain at the service of prayer and spiritual growth. He continued that technology is not merely a technical tool but rather a new source of education, and that the consecrated--just as technology--are an instrument in the Creator’s hands for the service of the Church, providing that the consecrated life remains rooted in communion and love, and that modern means be employed in the service of the Gospel and the Church’s teaching.

This was followed by an open discussion which involved exchange of views among the participants.

Later, Fr. Rashid Mustrih celebrated Holy Mass which was concelebrated by Fr. Fadi Saab who delivered the homily. During the Holy Mass, religious vows were renewed marking the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Candles were lit, and prayers were offered in several languages for the Church, for the Pope, for the consecrated men and women, for the poor and marginalized, for peace, for young people searching for meaning in their lives, for the sick and the elderly, and for all those who care for them.
