Her Royal Highness Princess Dana Firas, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, has noted that "Jordan constitutes a unique destination on the map of global Christian pilgrimage, and a living space for spiritual and historical encounter among religions." She made these remarks while patronizing a seminar on religious tourism and Christian pilgrimage routes in Jordan, at Ammon Applied University College marking the International Day for Monuments and Sites on Sunday, April 19.
Princess Dana stressed that this occasion holds particular significance today, given the prevailing regional conditions as well as the targeting of cultural and religious heritage. She added that "heritage is associated with justice, dignity, identity, and mutual understanding, which forces us to face the prevailing narratives that promote the idea of 'a clash of civilizations,' and affirm that this land has historically been 'the cradle of successive civilizations' and continues to be so by serving as a living model of religious and cultural diversity, cohesion, and the capacity of communities to be steadfast and to adapt."
She pointed out that Jordan is home to outstanding religious sites on the Christian pilgrimage map, most notably are the Baptism Site of Lord Jesus, Mount Nebo, Madaba, and Um Ar-Rasas, in addition to the trail of the prophets in the northern part of the Kingdom which includes Mar Elias Site and the John the Baptist trail embodied in the site of Machaerus. Noting that these sites reflect "the depth of the Christian presence in the region," she added that they "are not merely lines on a map, but rather living narratives expressing the continuous interaction between humans and place."
She accentuated the importance of documenting these trails, preserving them, and safeguarding their spiritual and cultural significance, while ensuring their transmission to future generations which consolidates Jordan's role as a platform for interfaith and intercultural dialogue. She continued that "promoting religious tourism in Jordan is not limited to attracting visitors, but also contributes to entrenching these shared human values and to enhancing the Kingdom's role as a bridge for dialogue among cultures and civilizations."
Concluding her address, Princess Dana Firas affirmed that Jordan, with its spiritual and human heritage, "remains a living model that reflects the effect of heritage on entire peoples, and upholds the values of peace and understanding." She called for adopting a "shared responsibility" in continuing to protect, document, and activate this heritage, so as to remain a beacon for generations to come.
