Bethlehem University continues to demonstrate its commitment to research and technological innovation with the recent publication of a groundbreaking conference paper by Dr. Suhail Odeh, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Engineering, alongside a team of researchers and students from Bethlehem University, Abu Dhabi University, and Arab American University.
Their research paper, “LEADOW: An Empowering Indoor Navigation System for Individuals with Visual Impairments Using Bluetooth Beacons and Audio Guidance,” was published in the Springer Nature eBook “Optimization and Data Science in Industrial Engineering,” following its presentation at the First International Conference on Optimization and Data Science in Industrial Engineering (ODSIE 2023) in Istanbul, Turkey.
The LEADOW system represents a significant advancement in assistive technology, addressing mobility challenges faced by visually impaired individuals. The mobile application utilizes Bluetooth hardware transmitters, known as beacons, which are strategically placed throughout indoor environments. These beacons send signals to users’ smartphones, allowing the LEADOW app to determine precise location data. Users then receive real-time audio guidance to navigate safely and efficiently to their desired destinations.
Unlike many existing navigation tools that primarily serve outdoor environments, LEADOW is specifically designed for indoor use, overcoming a major accessibility barrier for individuals with visual impairments. The system provides an intuitive and user-friendly experience, offering step-by-step directions that significantly enhance mobility and independence. By integrating cutting-edge Bluetooth technology with seamless mobile app functionality, LEADOW delivers an innovative solution that improves the quality of life for blind and visually impaired individuals.
The study is the result of a collaboration between researchers from various institutions:
